The Sixth International Particle Accelerator Conference IPAC’15 (link opens in a new window) was held on 3-8 May in Richmond, Virginia, USA. The annual conference is the largest of its kind and brings together scientists, engineers, students, and industrial representatives from around the world to share the latest developments and research in the fields of accelerator physics, technology and engineering.

The scientific programme included almost 100 oral presentations and 1,400 posters from nearly 30 countries and 225 institutions. On 6 May Dr Shinji Machida from the Intense Beams Group gave an invited oral presentation on Benchmarking and Application of Space Charge Codes for Rings.

ASTeC staff led or contributed to 32 paper publications, covering a wide variety of accelerator programmes and including the commissioning of new VELA experiments and hardware. A wide range of ASTeC staff attended and ASTeC Technical Director Peter McIntosh commented, “It was great to see so many of our Post-doc, PhD and sandwich students getting the opportunity to present their work to leading experts from around the world”.

Sonal Mistry, 2nd year PhD student from Loughborough University, attended IPAC for the first time and was interested to see what a diverse range accelerator science was on show outside of her own field. Sonal, who works in the ASTeC Vacuum Science Group, presented a poster on her research into on metal photocathodes for NCRF guns, said “this was also a great opportunity to discuss my work with colleagues around the world who share my interests, but otherwise I may never have met in person”.

The conference was organised by Jefferson Lab, and sponsored by the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society and the APS Division of Physics of  Beams. Sue Waller of the ASTeC administrative group played an important part as a member of the JACoW (link opens in a new window) administrative team which ensures international accelerator conference proceedings are published and widely available.
