ERL2015 is a forum for scientists and engineers from around the world to review the latest developments in energy recovery linac physics

The 56th ICFA Advanced Beam Dynamics Workshop  on Energy Recovery Linacs (ERL2015) was held 7–12 June at Stony Brook University, Long Island, New York. ERL15 is the sixth in the series of international workshops covering accelerator physics and technology of Energy Recovery Linacs. The workshop serves as a forum for scientists and engineers from around the world to review the latest developments in ERL physics,  technology and applications, to exchange ideas and discuss hot topics. ALICE at Daresbury is one of only four operational ERLs worldwide so ASTeC accelerator physicists were major contributors to the scientific proceedings.

Peter Williams was invited to give a plenary talk entitled “10 Years of ALICE: From Concept to Operational User Facility”. Frank Jackson presented “Fast Electron Beam and FEL Diagnostics at the ALICE IR-FEL at Daresbury Laboratory” in the beam instrumentation and controls working group session. Lee Jones presented results from the TESS (Transverse Energy Spread Spectrometer) photocathode characterisation experiment in “GaAs Photocathode R&D: Energy Spread Measurements and the Nature of the Activated p-GaAs(Cs,O) Activation Layer” in the injectors and beam instrumentation joint working group session.

The talks delivered by ASTeC personnel were very well received and prompted lively discussion with colleagues from other laboratories during the networking periods which,  alongside excellent Chairmanship by the respective working group leaders, helped contribute to a very successful workshop for all involved.

The workshop was hosted by Brookhaven National Laboratory of which a tour was given on the final day. Participants visited the Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility, Brookhaven Energy Recovery Linac (which is currently in commissioning) and the newly opened National Synchrotron Light Source II.
